Investigative Exercise 6 Social Bookmarking

Take a look at the catalogue of the State Library of Tasmania http://www.statelibrary.tas.gov.au/. Search the catalogue for the book Born or bred?: Martin Bryant: the making of a mass murderer by Robert Wainwright.  Read the reviews made by library users about this book.

Also take a look at the system for book reviews by following this link at Clarence Regional Library  http://www.crl.nsw.gov.au/readers-corner/book-reviews/

Click on the section  “to read all book reviews placed from other readers.”   Take a look at the recent reviews made on this catalogue

Write a post on your blog commenting on the usefulness of these reviews. Do you think libraries should be providing this service? Does the library you use have this option available on their catalogue?  Make certain you label your post.

  2. Hi, Poppy, i like the idea of reader reviews and would like my local library to have this facility. I think it encourages interaction with readers and creates interest in different books you may not have even looked at if someone hadn't written a review.
I enjoyed reading the reviews posted especially the ones from the State Library of Tasmania. It created an interest in reading this book that i will follow up in the holidays.
    Thank you Meagan

  3. Book reviews are important and the writers of those reviews are never should be discouraged. God bless every person who has read a book from the first page to the last one and gave an articulate opinion on it!

Sadly, in these days, when the airwaves are littered with swearwords and easy to digest popular culture, when gossip magazines multiply by the dozen, we have to treasure every single book reader, keep them motivated and give them platform to express their view....Obviously, these reports could be way too subjective so we have to handle them with caution.

  4. Social Bookmarking is a useful way for clients to recommend books to one another and assess what other clients think they should read. I view this as a very useful tool that helps clients locate interesting items and act as a group which will in turn benefit the library. My local library provides an online system for clients to review books and search for items based on how well they have been rated.
