Investigative Exercise 5 Social Networking

People can have their own personal webpage housed in a communal website. It is a great way to build up professional networks and collaborate in a workplace. It is considered a community building tool.  Facebook is currently very popular for individuals and there is a feature where you can create page for a celebrity, band or business.  MySpace has been used a lot by libraries. An example of library activity in 2009 on MySpace is Yarra Plenty Library. Do a Google search for “Myspace and Yarra” to find this site. Also take a look at what the National Library of Australia has done on Facebook. http://www.nla.gov.au/pub/gateways/issues/94/story07.html
Do a Google search for the following phrase - “I'll Bet I Can Find 1,000,000 People Who Think Libraries Are Important”. Take a look at this advocacy site on Facebook. It also has some great quotes about the value of libraries. Write a post on your blog about why you think it is a good idea for a library to participate on a social networking site, or why not. Make certain you label your post.
If you are a Facebook member you might like to join the “Libraries are important” site. (joining Facebook and/or joining this site is not assessed).

Labels for this post  social networking, facebook, myspace, advocacy, Exercise 5
